Alternation of generations
Plant ki life do alag bodies ke beech jhoolti hai — ek diploid jo spores banati hai, ek haploid jo gametes banati hai — aur dono ek-doosre ko janm dete hain.
Diploid sporophyte (2n) meiosis se haploid spores banata hai. Har spore ek haploid gametophyte (n) me badalta hai, jo mitosis se gametes banata hai. Do gametes mil ke zygote — aur phir se sporophyte.
Kaunsi body dominant hai ye group par depend karta hai: moss me gametophyte main green plant hai; ferns aur higher plants me sporophyte dominate karta hai.

Ye ek hi plant ka beech me ploidy badalna NAHI hai. Sporophyte aur gametophyte do alag, genetically alag generations hain jo baari-baari aate hain.
